How does acne occur and what factors affect acne?
Acne occurs when special follicles or pores with large oil glands
known as sebaceous follicles, become blocked with excess oil
(sebum naturally moisturizes the skin and hair), sloughed skin
cells and bacteria (P. acnes). Several factors may trigger acne,
such as hormonal fluctuations (puberty, menstrual cycle,
pregnancy and menopause), heredity or other issues, such as
increased stress which can increase sebum production. Physical
pressure or irritation to the face may contribute to acne.

I’m an adult, why do I keep getting acne?
No matter your age, gender or race, acne affects individuals
from puberty to menopause. A common medical condition
known as chronic, persistent acne can follow some people
from adolescence to adulthood. Hormones are usually the
primary culprit for adult acne.

What general treatments are available for acne?
The most common treatments for mild acne can be found
over the counter. Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are
common active ingredients used to clear up and prevent acne
breakouts.

For moderate to severe acne, prescription medications may be
necessary to prevent or control acne breakouts. In more severe
cases, dermatologists should be consulted for specialized
treatments.

 
Common Myths

Acne is caused by poor hygiene. False. Poor hygiene is not the culprit. Acne is one of the most common skin diseases and is mostly caused by internal factors deep in the skin; therefore, anyone can get it. It is very important to remember it is not the individual’s fault for having acne.

Eating chocolate or fried, greasy foods causes acne. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “Extensive scientific studies have not found a connection between diet and acne.”

Aggressive washing and scrubbing will keep acne at bay? Actually, squeezing, picking or aggravating acne with aggressive means can make it worse by intensifying inflammation and may result in infection or scarring. The best advice is to gently wash the affected areas twice a day with mild soap and warm water then pat dry.

Oily skin causes acne. Acne is associated with excessive production of oil deep in follicles. The skin surface can range from dry to oily. Always try to choose oil-free, non-comedogenic, water-based skin care products if you are acne-prone.
