Married for eight years to Vaughn Patterson; we have one two-year-old daughter.

My fave things:

My favorite vacation destination is anywhere that includes a cruise ship (which means nonstop all-you-can-eat buffet ... my favorite five words). My favorite book and movie is Twilight or any part of the Twilight series.

Before starting my Mary Kay business:

I was a department manager at a Fortune 500 bank.

When I became an Independent Beauty Consultant:

When I started my Mary Kay business, I had just become engaged and I knew that my fiancé and I had an expensive event to plan and pay for. Putting all of the expenses on my credit card did not seem very appealing, and I thought I could just work a little on the side to help pay for our wedding. We paid for wedding expenses all in cash! We even had enough to contribute toward our down payment on our house.

Early obstacles:

My biggest "hang-up" with starting my own business is that it seemed so different than what I thought my life would look like. My parents always taught me to go to the best college, get a useful degree and work for a large company. So starting my own Mary Kay business seemed like a very wild and half-crazy idea.

What I love most about my business:

I personally LOVE the sense of accomplishment that I feel in reaching my goals! I embrace being my own boss so much.

How this opportunity has changed me:

There are so many aspects in my life that I am more comfortable with – I have become a better communicator, a more genuine, empathetic person and a much, much, much more positive person. Prior to Mary Kay, I had a lot of stress in my life and a very intense, competitive work environment. Now I embrace a mentality of abundance and gratitude.

What has surprised me most:

I was most surprised about how much fun I have had ... it is truly enjoyable to laugh at yourself, spread beauty to others and have every day feel new, different and exciting.

My advice to someone considering a Mary Kay business:

I would encourage that person to try it out, put your baby toe in the water. I always ask "What's the worst that could happen?" There is very little risk in trying out this opportunity that may change your life.

What Mary Kay connections mean to me:

I have a unique opportunity to love and work with other Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultants with unconditional support ... I am there to help, encourage, lead and motivate without all of the pressure or stress of a traditional boss. It's a great balance!

Why Mary Kay rocks:

Mary Kay has allowed me to have my priorities in balance. It has given me the ability to be with my daughter more than I ever thought I could, and a chance to earn jewelry, trips and the use of a car!
