From: Madison, Miss.
I have been married for 24 years to Dennis Upkins and have three children: Markeisha, 20; Kyonna, 17; and Makayla, 14. All of my children came home from the hospital in Mary Kay Career Cars! These are exciting times because my kids grew up seeing Mom work from home and, every two years, picking up a new car. And now with my oldest being 20 and in college, mom is still working from home as a successful businesswoman and still earning the chance to drive pink Cadillacs.
My fave things:
My hobbies are reading, running, exercise and shopping.
Before starting my Mary Kay business:
I was working at Walmart part-time as a college student pursuing a nursing degree.
Why I became an Independent Beauty Consultant:
To finance my college career.
What I love most about my business:
The freedom and flexibility to make my own choices in life.
How this opportunity has changed me:
I went from being a shy, insecure person to becoming well respected and a leader in Mary Kay and also my community. What changed most in my family life was financial stability.
What has surprised me most:
How simple it was to learn the necessary skills in order to build a successful business and how willing others were to help mentor you to the top!
"Go for it, you have nothing to lose."
My advice to someone considering a Mary Kay business:
Go for it! You have nothing to lose but fear and everything to gain without the glass ceilings.
What Mary Kay connections mean to me:
I am very thankful for the connections I have made in my Mary Kay business. I can't imagine being in this life without knowing some of my Mary Kay girlfriends. What a wonderful opportunity Mary Kay offers.
Why Mary Kay rocks:
The Mary Kay philosophy: God first, family second, career third.
My biggest supporter
My husband, Dennis, supports me totally in my business. I met Dennis when I was an Independent Beauty Consultant and he went to my parties with me. Today, 24 years later, he still remains excited about this company and our wonderful life we share. He has never missed a Seminar. This means a lot because I know that he totally enjoys me being happy and what we have accomplished as a family with my Mary Kay business.
