As part of our ongoing commitment to Pink Doing Green®, Mary Kay Inc. will plant one tree in the United States, in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation and the U.S. Forest Service, for every 10 flip-top caps and/or color refill cases received by Mary Kay Inc. – up to 100,000 trees. To date we have turned thousands of pieces of plastic into trees. You can participate by sending your empty Mary Kay® flip top caps and color refill cases to:

  • Planting Trees Around the World – Mary Kay Inc. planted 200,000 trees in the Bitterroot National Forest in Montana and 100,000 trees in the Pike National Forest in Colorado with the U.S. Forest Service and the Arbor Day Foundation. Mary Kay China annually plants trees in Shanghai, Hangzhou and Ningxia. In addition, employees from Mary Kay Russia, Mary Kay Mexico and Mary Kay Malaysia are involved with tree-planting programs.
  • Recycling Products – When Mary Kay launched a new refillable compact, the Company began recycling previously used and outdated Mary Kay® compacts. More than 300,000 have been recycled. And as part of the Company’s ongoing efforts to be more sustainable and green, Mary Kay collects flip-top caps and color refill cases, helping to reduce the amount of plastic sent to landfills.
  • Recycling Waste – An extensive recycling program is in place at the Mary Kay global manufacturing facility in Dallas. The facility strives to make Mary Kay® products in an environmentally responsible way and is among leaders in the industry, recently achieving zero-landfill status. The facility also sends a recycler an average of 30 tons of alcohol waste each year that can be used as a gasoline additive.
  • Recycling on a Corporate Level – Since 1989, Mary Kay has been among the first companies to have an extensive recycling program that now includes product line packaging, paper, plastic, corrugated cardboard, ink cartridges, old cell phones and aluminum.
  • Using Renewable Materials – Many Mary Kay distribution centers ship orders using packing materials made from renewable corn and potato starch (biopeanuts), which are 100 percent biodegradable.
  • Product Packaging – The Mary Kay® Botanical Effects™ product line was developed with the environment in mind. The tubes are made from 50 percent post-consumer resin, lightweight caps are used and the cartons are made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled materials. Additionally, many Mary Kay® product inserts are made with a minimum of 20 percent recycled content.
  • Conservation – Mary Kay reduced energy consumption at the global corporate facilities by enough to power more than 1,000 average homes for one year. In 2008, Mary Kay Inc. Global Transportation began a concerted effort to measure and reduce carbon emissions and has reduced the Company’s transportation carbon footprint by 33 percent since that time. The Mary Kay global manufacturing facility also launched a program promoting water conservation and in the past year has reduced its water consumption by 19 percent, which is enough to fill more than 660 backyard swimming pools.
  • Global Recognition – In 1993, Mary Kay® received the first Fashion and Environmental Award from the United Nations Environment Program. The Company also has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Keep America Beautiful and the American Lung Association. In 2007, Mary Kay China was awarded the Model Unit of Environment Protection by the Environment Protection Bureau of the Hangzhou Economic and Development Area.

I feel very strongly that we must do everything in our power to save our planet or our grandchildren will not have a place to live. Let me emphasize that Mary Kay® is an environmental leader because we strongly feel it is the right thing to do.
